Edition of Manuel Cardoso’s “Magnificat Secundi Toni”
It is now available the edition of the Magnificat Secundi Toni I prepared of Portuguese composer, the Carmelite friar Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650) for the Edições MPMP series “Polyphonia” (n.º 41).
This is probably one of Manuel Cardoso’s best known works and also one that is difficult to find in modern edition besides the 1960’s edition published by the Gulbenkian Foundation. Manuel Cardoso published a collection of Magnificat settings in 1613, printed by Pedro Craesbeeck’s workshop in Lisbon. The print contains 16 setting, following the eight tones with one version (usually for four voices) for the odd verses of the chant and another version (usually for five voices) for the even verses. The present edition is a five-voice setting (SSATB, with some verses with other voice arrangements for specific verses such as SATT, or SSAATB) for the Second Tone version.
